Birthday candles originated in ancient Greece, where people placed lit candles on round cakes to honor Artemis, the goddess of the moon, believing the smoke carried their prayers to the heavens. The glowing candles symbolized the moon’s radiance and were a way to show reverence and seek favor from the goddess.
