Long before cars, newlyweds decorated horse drawn carriages with flowers and ribbons and tied shoes or other noisy trinkets so the rattle would announce the union, bring luck, and scare off bad spirits. The same idea continues today with streamers, Just Married signs, and clattering tin cans on cars.
